Hezbollah Issues Ultimatum for Israeli Withdrawal from Southern Lebanon.

On Sunday, the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Naim Qassem, issued a firm ultimatum demanding that Israeli troops completely withdraw from Lebanese territory by 18 February. This statement underscores Hezbollah’s commitment to a military exit following a prolonged period of heightened conflict in the region.

The ultimatum aligns with a truce brokered by the United States in November, which initially granted Israeli forces a 60-day window to retreat from southern Lebanon, where they had engaged in ground offensives against Hezbollah fighters since early October. Although the withdrawal deadline was extended, Israel’s military has expressed a desire to retain a presence at five specific posts in the region.

Qassem’s comments were unequivocal: “Israel must withdraw completely on 18 February. It has no pretext, no five points or other details. This is the agreement.” He further emphasized that any continued Israeli military presence beyond the stipulated date would be regarded as an act of occupation.

As the deadline approaches, the geopolitical implications of this ultimatum. Heightened tensions in the region raise concerns about stability and peace, necessitating close attention from international observers. The outcome of this situation may significantly influence the broader dynamics of Israeli-Lebanese relations.
