Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi Elected President of the Canadian Medical Association.
Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi, a Nigerian-born clinical associate professor of medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland, has been elected as the new President of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). This significant achievement reflects not only his commitment to the field of medicine but also his dedication to addressing the pressing issues within Canada’s healthcare system.
Practicing as a medical dermatologist in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and serving as a visiting specialist in Labrador City since 2018, Dr. Ogunyemi has garnered a wealth of experience over his 15 years in medical leadership. His election, decided by eligible CMA members in Newfoundland and Labrador between November 20 and December 4, 2024, saw him prevail against Dr. Susan MacDonald, a respected advocate for palliative care.
In his remarks following the election, Dr. Ogunyemi emphasized the importance of unity within the profession and the necessity of advocating for a robust healthcare system. “As CMA president-elect, I will advocate for a unified profession, a strong healthcare system, and healthier communities,” he stated, underscoring his vision for the future of Canadian healthcare.
Pending approval at the CMA’s Annual General Meeting in May 2025, Dr. Ogunyemi will initially assume the role of President-elect before officially becoming President for a one-year term in May 2026. His leadership promises to bring new insights and fervor to the organization, ultimately benefiting the healthcare landscape across Canada.
