Court Warns Akpabio: Jail Threat Looms Over Natasha’s Suspension
Senate President Godswill Akpabio risks imprisonment for allegedly defying a court order as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan initiates contempt proceedings against the Senate.
Following her controversial six-month suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan filed a contempt charge against Akpabio, the Clerk of the National Assembly, and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct, Senator Neda Imasuem.
Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier issued an ex-parte order on March 4, restraining the Senate from taking disciplinary action against Akpoti-Uduaghan. However, despite this order, the Senate proceeded with her suspension, sealing her office and demanding the return of all Senate property in her possession.
In response, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team filed a Form 48 Notice of Disobedience of Court Order, warning Akpabio and others that their defiance could lead to imprisonment. The court document, obtained by SaharaReporters, emphasizes that their actions are in “flagrant defiance” of judicial authority.
