Court Declines Ex Parte Request for PDP NEC Meeting Amid Factional Dispute
In a significant legal decision, a Federal High Court seated in Zamfara State has opted to decline a request for an ex parte order submitted by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) associated with the party’s Governors Forum chairman, Governor Bala Mohammed. This request aimed to facilitate the holding of a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, amidst escalating tensions within the party.
The ruling was delivered by Justice Salim Ibrahim, who rejected the faction’s plea. The move to convene the NEC meeting comes as internal strife within the PDP deepens, particularly following attempts by some party governors, led by Mohammed, to unseat the acting national chairman, Amb. Umar Damagum. This initiative, however, faced resistance from other prominent party members, notably supporters of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Adding to the complexities of the situation, a Federal High Court in Abuja had previously issued an injunction preventing any actions against Damagum, thereby highlighting the intricate web of legal and political challenges confronting the PDP. The faction’s latest suit was lodged in the Zamfara court, illustrating the intensifying disputes that characterize the party’s current landscape.
As the PDP navigates these turbulent waters, the implications of this ruling may significantly affect the party’s ongoing efforts to reconcile its internal differences and restore unity within its ranks.
