Clarification from Anambra State Government on Homeland Security Law.
In a recent press statement released by Dr. Law Mefor, the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, the state government clarified that the newly enacted Anambra Homeland Security Law is not intended to target practitioners of traditional religion. This statement comes in the wake of concerns regarding the arrest of native doctors involved in the preparation of charms for kidnappers.
During the second meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) on February 10, 2025, the council commended Operation Udo Ga-Achi, the state’s latest security initiative, and emphasized the importance of its efforts to combat crime. Dr. Mefor articulated the council’s stance, stating that the law aims to address illegal activities perpetrated by unscrupulous individuals who distort traditional practices for nefarious purposes.
He stressed that traditional religion holds significant value within Igbo culture and emphasized that the government has no intention of outlawing such practices. Rather, the focus is on promoting societal values and reengineering social norms to safeguard the community’s future.
The council’s assertions reaffirm that while the government is committed to upholding public safety through stringent measures, it equally respects the cultural heritage and traditional beliefs that form the bedrock of Anambra society.
