The Abia State Harmonized Taskforce (ASHTF) has recently commenced a significant crackdown on street trading and unauthorized structures in the urban centers of Aba and Umuahia. The operation, aptly titled “Operation Restore Absolute Sanity,” aims to maintain order and enhance the visual landscape of these cities.

On a particularly impactful Tuesday, the enforcement activities in Umuahia, where traders were systematically removed from unapproved locations along key routes including Isi Gate by Umuwaya Road, Abriba Street, Ohafia Street, and Warri Street. The taskforce also took action against illegal motor parks, sealing them off, and impounding trucks that were obstructing traffic flow.

The operation did not merely serve to displace traders; it involved the confiscation of makeshift structures such as tables and wooden culverts, which were then destroyed on-site or removed by truck. Importantly, the goods of the traders were preserved and not destroyed, indicating an approach aimed at both enforcement and compassion.

The crackdown extended to various hotspots in Aba, including Osisioma Junction, Tonimas, Enyimba, Double Pole, Ariaria Junction, and Park Road. Here, traders and motorists who had encroached upon public spaces and blocked drainage systems were also compelled to vacate.

Uzor Nwachukwu, the Chairman of ASHTF and Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, spearheaded the operation. He asserted that all involved parties—traders, motorists, and operators of illegal motor parks—had been duly notified to vacate these areas voluntarily prior to the enforcement actions.

This operation reflects the government’s commitment to urban regulation and order, as well as its intention to create a conducive environment for all citizens. The ASHTF’s efforts are a commendable step towards achieving a more organized and aesthetically pleasing Abia State.
